Phosphorescent - I Gotta Get Drunk

Willie Nelson cover.  Sure is good to have tumblr back in action.

There’s a lot of doctors tell me
That I’d better start slowing it down
But there’s more old drunks than there are old doctors
So I guess we’d better have another round

White Lung - Loose Heels

So this rocked my world today.

Website says “Mix the punk venom of some of the more notorious riot grrrl bands of the 90’s with the guitar noodling and tempo of UK post punk by way of John Reis and you get something pretty close to WHITE LUNG”

Myspace page tell us from Vancouver ftw.  http://www.myspace.com/whitelungwhitelung

A review of the record says: “When I listen to WHITE LUNG, i want to be moving forward really fast with either a machete or baseball bat knocking shit over.  Like, i wanna be the protagonist in a skateboarding video game.  Yeah, WHITE LUNG makes me wanna kick ass in a fantasy world. “

my top 13 records of 2010

As a little lunchtime distraction, here are my top 13 (don’t know why 13, but seems as good a number as any) records of 2010, in alphabetical order:

Allo Darlin’ : Allo Darlin’
Arcade Fire : The Suburbs
Beach House : Teen Dream
Crystal Castles : Crystal Castles ( II )
Foals : Total Life Forever
Gil Scot-Heron : I’m New Here
Joanna Newsom : Have One On Me
Magnetic Man : Magnetic Man
Phosphorescent : Here’s To Taking It Easy
Roky Erickson & Okkervil River : True Love Cast Out All Evil
Rolo Tomassi : Cosmology
Sleigh Bells : Treats
The National : High Violet

Links are to Spotify, where available. I’ve probably forgotten about a few, and given how many great records came out (and I bought) this year there’s of course some great stuff that I didn’t manage to include. Anyway - enjoy!

PS: As someone pointed out, I did indeed forget at least one album that should be on this list, so now let’s make it 14 with…

Holy Fuck : Latin

Wednesday is new-Sufjan-Stevens-song-day. Lovely.

Darwin Deez Dance: you had to be there really, but posting this video I recorded during Darwin Deez’ performance at Latitude this year.

my Latitude 2010 highlights

Having (briefly) slept on it, here’s my personal quick highlights from this year’s Latitude festival

  • Crystal Castles simply blew me away. If I had to pick one overall performance, this would be the one.

  • Darwin Deez wins hands-down in the feel-good stakes. He walked around in front of the stage before the gig, hugging fans and letting them touch his rather amazing hair. With the entire band doing hilarious dance routines between the songs, it was hard to stop smiling all the way through.

  • First time I’ve seen The National live, and they were as good as I’d hoped.

  • Discovered some great new bands, including Teeth, who - in a case of effective twitter marketing - , sent me a tweet asking to come and see them. I went and wasn’t disappointed. Other previously unknown (to me) bands I really enjoyed include Zun Zun Egui and Nedry.

Of course, there was plenty more I loved, and even more I missed - for more photos, see my Latitude 2010 collection on Flickr.

absolutely brilliant … Tambourine Dream - Pocketknife & Cousin Cole  (thx @CharlieGower)
